Hemorrhoids are enlarged veins in the lower portion of the rectum or anus. They are caused by increased pressure in the veins of the anus. The most common cause is straining at bowel movements. Constipation, prolonged sitting, and anal infection are contributing factors. Internal hemorrhoids occur near the beginning of the anal canal, and external hemorrhoids occur at the anal opening. Hemorrhoids also sometimes protrude outside the anus. They are very common, especially during pregnancy and after childbirth. The incidence is 2 out of 1000 people.
Mild cases may be helped by drinking fluids, high-fiber diet, and regular toilet habits.
Iron deficiency anemia can result from prolonged loss of blood.
One of the oldest natural remedies for piles is to take a peeled clove of garlic and insert it into the anus right after stool. Also do this at night in bed if possible. Garlic helps reduce swelling.
Comfrey can also help. Making a poultice of comfrey leaves can help. Also a comfrey tea can be drunk to relieve pain.
